Dear Parents of Our Graduating 8th Grade Class of 2012,
After years of sacrifice and commitment to the education of your student, they will be moving on to the next stage of their development. It is an exciting time and probably a little scary too, and I am talking for you the parents. Take a moment to pause and reflect on the incredible gift you have given your student, and remind yourselves why you chose Catholic education.
Your relationship with St. Columba has served to teach the truth and the saving grace of Christ in all that we do. It is why we gather in community, to give our children the spiritual and intellectual gifts that will help them grow into strong Catholic Christians who are productive, participatory citizens. Catholic school has been more than just another education option; it has played a significant role in forming your child and our community. Together, we have provided an education opportunity that exceeds standards, and is rooted in the Gospel.
As you know, the mission of St. Columba School is “to teach Gospel truth and moral value in an environment of academic excellence according to Catholic tradition.” Said another way, St Columba School has taught your child to put God first; to teach as Jesus did. Your commitment to Catholic education has introduced the truth in academic formation that has not only excited the intellect, but invaded the heart. Your students have learned to trust in the truth and to do what is just and right. They have been expected to love their brothers and sisters, and to put people before material possessions. In the words of the Venerable Pope John Paul II, “When Catholic schools teach children the truth of themselves, of God, and of the human condition, it will not only make them wise but set them free.” It has been our pleasure as teachers to be engaged in this sacred vocation. Now the time has come to “set them free.”
As the primary educator of your child, you have given them the gift of confidence, and faith in the Word that will serve them well. They will be leaders amongst their peers and the example that many will follow. Your gift has been our privilege. Again, we thank you for your commitment to St. Columba and for choosing us to be a part of your student’s formation.
Peace in Christ,
Your St. Columba School Community.

During March, our middle school students learned video editing with Windows Live Movie Maker software by creating public service announcements about the charities we donate to here at St. Columba School. We had a film festival at the end of the unit, during which students voted for their top three PSAs. You can view them here.
Third through fifth grade students practiced searching databases, and viewed panoramic pictures of Prague as we read the legend of the Little King, the Infant of Prague. Primary grade students enjoyed the story of "The Velveteen Rabbit" with me, and Kindergarden illustrated and summarized the story in class. I was amazed when they presented me with their work today (really impressive!). |
