ADMISSIONS POLICIES:
Any child enrolled in St. Columba School is automatically enrolled to participate in the After School Program. Only students enrolled in St. Columba School will be allowed to participate in the After School Program. Extended care is a privilege, not a right. Children must obey the rules and regulations of St. Columba School.
CHARGES:
The After School Program begins at 3:05 pm. There is no charge from 3:05-3:15pm for After School care. A charge of $5.00 per each student signed in is assessed at 3:15. Another $5.00 charge is assessed at 4:15 for each student who is still signed in. After School ends at 5:30pm. Any student(s) not picked up by 5:30 pm will be assessed a charge at a rate of $10.00 every 5 minutes, per student, until picked up.
Children must be signed out of the After School Program by a parent or guardian who is listed as authorized to pick up in the school office. Anyone picking up a child from the After School Program who is not already known to the After School staff will be asked to show identification prior to picking up a child. If there is a special pick-up person needed, please arrange it in advance with the front office and be sure the person picking up brings a photo ID.
PHILOSOPHY:
This program is designed to provide a safe and secure atmosphere for those children whose parents are unable (due to work or other circumstances) to be home at this time of day. This program is closely supervised. The After School Program strives to construct an enjoyable atmosphere with varying activities, including vigorous play, art activities, homework time and games. The children are served a nutritious snack at 3:30 each day.
It is our philosophy that after a long day at school, many of the children just need to relax and unwind. That is why we do not make activities mandatory. We have many games for the children so that they can choose their own activities. They will play indoors and outdoors under supervision at the discretion of those supervising. Because we feel that fresh air and outdoor play are healthy for your child(ren), we will have playtime outside daily (weather permitting). Therefore, if you do not feel your child(ren) should go outside due to illness, please do not send him or her to school.
It is important you provide proper clothing for the weather conditions in our area. All outer wear should be well-labeled on the inside. During winter, snow clothing must be provided or children will not be permitted to play outside. It is also helpful to send extra shoes and socks on days when there is snow on the ground. Children cannot, due to fire code, be inside without shoes and shoes tend to get wet and cold playing in the snow.
Indoor locations available to After School change. During inclement weather, look for a sign on the door leading to the service hallway/gym noting where to pick up your child.
A supervisor is on duty at all times. Although accidents still happen, we believe good supervision prevents many accidents and assures your child(ren) greater safety.
Once checked into After School, students may not leave the school grounds unless they are checked out by an authorized person. Students who leave the grounds may not return and check into After School, with the exception of special events when parental permission is obtained, and approval is given by the school office. Students who come and go to After School for on-campus activities such as music lessons, scouts, or sports are assessed a charge from 3:05.
DISCIPLINE CODE:
Behavior expectations of students in After School are the same expectations as during the school day. Every child is expected to abide by the rules of the program, respect staff members, other students, and all property. If a child violates these standards, we will first take action by removing the child from the group and seating him by himself for a 5-10 minute period. If multiple “time-outs” are required for a child, a parent will be notified. If the problem behavior persists, the parents will be called in for a conference. Should there continue to be problems, a second conference will be arranged and at that time, the child may be dismissed from the program.
HEALTH & SAFETY:
After School supervisors have access to school files which include health information, food allergies, emergency contacts, and a list of people authorized to pick-up your child(ren).
As with during school hours, first aid supplies are available and can be provided by the After School staff. The staff will contact parents, principal, or emergency services at their discretion for more severe injuries.
PROGRAM:
At the 3:05 bell that ends the school day, students who will be attending After School must place their backpacks and outerwear (if not needed on the playground) on the hooks in the service hall and immediately check in with the After School staff. A snack is served to all children signed into After School at 3:30pm.
Students who are participating in Homework Club should go directly to Homework Club when the bell rings at 3:05, and a representative from After School will check in with homework club and take attendance. If your child is picked up before Homework Club ends at 3:35, there is no charge for Homework Club. Students staying in After School must check in with a representative of After School when they leave Homework Club. All students picked up from After School after attending Homework Club will be charged for After School from 3:15.
Homework Club is available most afternoons, Monday – Thursday, until 3:35 p.m. There is no Homework Club on Fridays or half days. Homework Club is occasionally due to staff meetings or other scheduling conflicts with the teachers who supervise at Homework Club. While every effort is made to notify parents of monthly staff meeting closures, etc, occasionally unscheduled closures occur. If Homework Club is canceled, students not picked up by 3:15 will be signed into After School and families charged accordingly.
For other activities, such as music lessons, scouts, or sports, where parents are provided the convenience of school and/or After School staff moving children in and out of After School, families will be charged for After School from 3:05pm until signed out by an authorized person.
Students may not sign themselves out of After School. Parents/guardians must sign out students according to the guidelines previously noted.
***NOTE: Any child on the school grounds at 3:15 p.m. will be signed in to the After School Program and the family will be charged accordingly. Some children do not check in, but do hang around campus. This confuses the supervisors and creates an unsafe environment for children. Therefore, After School staff will check in those students and families will be charged accordingly.
Any questions regarding the policies of After School, charges, or special circumstances should be directed to the school office.
